The Estate
Tenuta Patruno Perniola is located in the heart of the Apulian Murgia, in Gioia del Colle, an evocative area of Apulia between the provinces of Bari and Taranto. Immersed in a hilly landscape of dry stone walls, olive groves and vineyards, the estate is a small, dynamic family business, deeply rooted in its territory and dedicated to producing quality wines from Primitivo grapes.
Our history
The estate was founded in the early nineteenth century out of a family’s passion for its land, so rich in history and traditions yet still little known, with the desire to represent it at its best through its products.
Its main goal is to preserve and enhance the characteristics of the area’s leading grape variety, Primitivo di Gioia del Colle, traces of which date back to the time of the Peucetians and which was first recognised and classified in the second half of the 18th century by Primicerius Filippo Indelicati. The Benedictine cleric soon recognised the variety’s potential, studying and improving it over the years until he selected the finest plants, which have come down to us.
The territory and the Terre Rosse
To this end, the vineyard next to the masseria has been restored, in an area particularly suited to Primitivo di Gioia del Colle because it brings out its best characteristics: the hillside position at about 350 m above sea level, excellent sun exposure, constant ventilation, frequent temperature swings and rocky, mineral-rich soil, which gives the ground the reddish colour that has earned this area the name “Terre Rosse”, the Red Lands.
Compared with other production areas, only here do such favourable climatic and territorial conditions lead to a wine of excellent quality: elegant, tannic, full-bodied, rich and harmonious.
Our philosophy in the cellar
Work in the cellar is never invasive and does not interfere with the full aromatic expression of the wines, with the aim of enhancing the character of Primitivo and the potential expressed by the terroir. The red Primitivo grapes are indeed the symbol, the identity and the winemaking history of Gioia del Colle.
We strongly believe in the potential of this variety, so much so that our interpretation of dry wines neither exaggerates their structure with wood, nor, at the opposite extreme, focuses on freshness and youthfulness. Instead, we aim to enhance their dense, full-bodied texture and the structure and consistency typical of great red wines.
Our wines
The estate produces wines from 100% Primitivo grapes: a Primitivo di Gioia del Colle DOC, an IGT and a sweet IGT.
The sweet version is a further exploration of the expressive possibilities of this land, following the ancient tradition of sweet Primitivo revisited with modern techniques.
The decision to have always worked exclusively with Primitivo goes hand in hand with the goal of constantly improving the quality of the wines produced, so that both wine lovers and occasional drinkers can enjoy something unique and inimitable.
